Troop 82 Photos

Shady Shack, May 2005

On May 13-15, 2005, Troop 82 traveled to the New River in Virginia.  There, Troop 82 was once again the guests of Mr. Lester Halsey and his wife.  The Halseys own and operate a campground known as Shady Shack, and each year the Halseys donate the exclusive use of their camping grounds to Boy Scout troops both just before and just after the camping season begins.  Asking nothing in return, they provide the Scouts with a beautiful campground by the shores of the New River.  Falling asleep at night with the sound of the water rushing by is something you have to experience to appreciate.  This year Troop 82 returned a small kindness when they repaired a footbridge that crossed a small brook on the site.  Mr. Halsey even supplied the tools and supplies while Mr. Osburn and Mr. Mrzlak led a team of Scouts in the repair work.  The Halseys showed up Saturday afternoon to thanks us for our work.  They were just in time to sample some of Troop 82's famous Dutch Oven Cobblers -- one peach (the Halseys were presented with two servings of the peach cobbler), one cherry-pineapple and one chocolate-cherry.  To the Halseys, Troop 82 once again says "Thank you!"

Ben Eicher and Geoffrey Corneau (l. to r.) waiting to get going while Mr. Dulin observes Mr. Corneau hitchin' the trailer!

Mr. Willard "Dawg" Osburn takes the big ole' refreshment jug with him.

Mr. Tony Dulin beckons to Ben Eicher. "Don't, Ben, don't!"

All dressed up -- well, close to all dressed up -- and nowhere to go, yet.

A view from the co-pilot's seat of NC plate SCTMSTR82. Mr. Carpenter maneuvers us to the left of a big rig.

Break lights! Break lights! Traffic is flowing pretty smoothly for a Friday afternoon on I-77 north.

Mr. Chris Burton is thinking of passing on the right side? Say it isn't so!

Mr. Chris Burton has just realized that he is trying to pass the Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler. Guess who's gonna have cleanup duty tonight....

A man and his cherry licorice. Our fearless leader, Mr. John Carpenter!

It's Saturday morning, just after 6 AM, and Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Dulin (l. to r.) enjoy their morning java.

What else do grown men eat when away from their wives and in the wilderness? Eggs (not pictured), home fries and kielbasa! Yummy.

Oranges! Fiber! An important part of any Assistant Scoutmaster's diet. Add on the chunky peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on four-grain bread later in the day and you've got all the makings of a healthy digestive tract.

Can you feel the love?

About 6:30 AM on Saturday and a ground fog darkens the morning at our campsite. But, it will burn off. The New River flows north from here.

The fog begins to lift just after 7 AM. A view upriver from the campsite.

Conner Peterson, visiting us from Pack 72, chows down with the adults. What a life!

Rodney Dulin is all smiles and sunshine. But then, 7 AM came along and he was back to normal.

"John, when he says, 'Hands on your hips,' do this." Mr. Ken Peterson briefs Mr. John Carpenter on the finer points of "Simon Says."
